Electrical waste in particular has become a key issue for businesses attempting to manage their waste. The majority of organisations now use IT equipment on a day to day basis and consequently the amount of redundant electrical equipment disposed of in landfill sites has increased dramatically over recent years.
The WEEE directive is aimed at encouraging reuse and recyclng and therefore minimising the negative enviromental aspects of disposal. The Directive sets targets that 65% of IT equipment must be recycled and materials such as CRT's (monitors), LCD displays, printed circuit boards, batteries and flame retardant plastics be pre-treated before disposal.
Putting fluorescent tubes into landfill isno longer an option under the "Hazardous Waste Regulations" Act of 2005. Currently about 60 million tubes per year are sent to landfills. |
